MASTER II/2

The Role

This position based in the UK and open only to British Passport Holders. The Master will have responsibility for the overall safety of the vessel, ship’s crew, security team personnel, cargo, stores and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • The overall safety of the vessel, ship’s crew, security team personnel, cargo, stores and equipment
  • The safe navigation of the vessel.
  • The welfare and management of the crew.
  • Implementation of and adherence to the Safety Management System and all laws, rules and regulations pertaining to their tasks
  • The vessel’s overall emergency preparedness.
  • Motivating and training the crew in matters connected with SMS.
  • Maintaining adequate records.
  • Reviewing the SMS on a regular basis and reporting any deficiencies to the DPA.
  • Adherence to statutory requirements, International & National Laws, Rules and Regulations
  • The maintenance on-board of all forms and documents and publications related to the management of the vessel including those referred to in Part 2 of the SMM
  • Maintain on-board copies of job descriptions of all officers.
  • Ensure that charts and nautical publications are corrected and up to date.
  • Ensure that an efficient and effective ‘Watch’ system is maintained at all times.
  • Provide standing orders and night orders for the guidance of Deck Officers.
  • Representative of the Company aboard the vessel.
  • Keep in contact with the DPA, Company Managers and Operations teams
  • Ensure that crew have all necessary certification to ensure the requirements of the Safe Manning Certificate are met
  • Ensure that the Weekly HSE Inspections are carried out and the form  (App.10) is completed on time each week and scores are discussed at the Safety Committee meeting; the completed form is saved to the Ships files and all copies for the month are included in the Master’s Monthly Report.
  • Carry out regular Inspections of all interior and exterior spaces (Captains Rounds) so that all crew have the opportunity of speaking to him and he can see and comment on the condition of the vessel to the relevant Departments.
  • Ensure that the necessary ISM and SOP Returns are completed, scanned for retention aboard and sent to Head Office by the Chief Mate for Audit purposes.
  • Any other duties as required.

MASTER OF CODED VESSELS <200GT

The Role

CHIEF ENGINEER

Role

This position is based in the UK and open only to British Passport Holders. The Chief Engineer is appointed to provide the Master of the vessel with a reliable and efficient Engineering Department so that the vessel can be relied upon to fulfill its function and operate when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Take charge of the Engineering Department and be responsible to the Master for it’s safe and efficient operation
  • Plan and implement schedules for mechanical and electrical maintenance aboard the ship
  • Assume responsibility as Fire Safety Officer (maintenance and checks of FFE and crew training)
  • Plan for and supervise Ship-wide technical maintenance
  • Ensure all records are maintained correctly and in a timely manner including Engine Room Logs and Oil Record Book
  • Ensure that a Planned Maintenance System is compiled and kept up to date
  • Responsible for ordering and recording spare parts and items necessary to ensure the continued operation of the vessel
  • Carry out normal engine watch-keeping and maintenance
  • Advise the Master about the likelihood and eventuality of damage or incident with mechanical or electrical equipment.

2ND ENGINEER

The Role

This position is based in the UK and open only to British Passport Holders. The 2nd Engineer is appointed to support the Chief Engineer and, should the need arise, be able to act as Chief Engineer of the vessel.  This role reports directly to the Chief Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Have sole responsibility during a watch period for the Engine Room as a ‘Watch-keeping’ Engineer
  • Keep the Chief Engineer informed of any changes affecting the ships equipment
  • Be able to replace the Chief Engineer should the need arise
  • Carry out a normal Engine Watch following Chief Engineers written instructions and recording such information as may be required to continue the safe operation of the ship’s systems
  • Responsible for the maintenance of specific Engine Room equipment as detailed by the Chief Engineer e.g. Main Engines
  • Work on technical equipment or installations to ensure good and safe operation
  • Oversee the training of Junior Engineers and Engine Room staff.
  • Attend to duties or training as requested by the Master or his Senior Officers to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the vessel.
  • Any other duties as required.

OOW

The Role

This position based in the UK and open only to British Passport Holders. The OOW is appointed to support the Chief Mate and carry out their duties and responsibilities in a safe, timely and efficient manner. They will report directly to the Chief Mate.

  • Safety training

  • Officer of the Watch.
  • Assist the Master and Chief Officer in the conduct of operations and safety aboard the vessel
  • Responsible for maintenance and checks of all the vessel Safety equipment according to SOLAS
  • The scheduling and carrying out of Safety Training for the crew and others aboard according to SOLAS and maintaining the necessary records.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and Safety checks of all the GMDSS radio equipment and recording in the ship’s radio logbook.
  • Ensuring a good level of maintenance of the Bridge equipment
  • Keeping Charts and publications up to date
  • Route and passage planning
  • Bridge Navigation
  • Operational watchkeeping; Ensure all Watch information is entered in a correct manner
  • Responsibility for the Ship’s Pharmacy and Medical equipment
  • Undergo local training to be able to launch and recover the Jolly Boats or tenders using the Ship’s davits.
  • Attend to duties or training as requested by the Master or his Senior Officers to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the vessel.
  • Any other duties as required.

ABLE SEAMAN II/5

The Role

This position based in the UK and open only to British Passport Holders. The “Able-bodied” seaman, or AB, is appointed to support the Officers in their roles and will report to the Chief Officer. The Scope and main purposes of the position are to assist the running of a watch where necessary by operating as a helmsman, look-out or other duties dictated by circumstance. Other tasks will require them to be practiced in General Maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of material, equipment and designated areas of the Deck department.

Responsibilities

  • Standing watches as look-out or helmsman on the Bridge or at the gangway.
  • Assist with emergency duties such as, but not limited to, firefighting, Man-overboard or oil spillage aboard ship.
  • Carry out Security patrols on deck and around the accommodation.
  • Duties involving mooring the vessel including handling warps and ropes
  • Handling and Securing items on deck such as Cargo, boats or other items
  • Garbage handling
  • If the sufficiently experienced to act in charge of other ABs
  • Be able to act as Coxswain of the Jolly Boat as and when required.
  • Any other duties as required.
